Publisher 2K Games and Gearbox Software have locked in Borderlands 4's September 12 release date for the PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Nintendo Switch 2 owners will have to wait a bit longer, however, as the handheld’s port is slated for an October 3 launch.
Confirmed by 2K on X, the studio proudly announced, “The badasses at Gearbox celebrate a major milestone–we’ve gone GOLD!”
While post-Gold delays sometimes occur, Gearbox seems very confident in Borderlands 4’s launch date, with preorders kicking in as early as June 16, 2025.
Earlier this year, Gearbox shifted Borderlands 4’s release date from September 23 to September 12. When inquired, Gearbox’s CEO Randy Pitchford insisted it had nothing to do with coinciding releases like Grand Theft Auto VI, which has now been delayed to May 26, 2026.
On July 14, Randy Pitchford leaked the entire Borderlands 4 map known as Kairos in a 12-part thread. Owing to the map’s larger size and open world design compared to Borderlands 3, the game’s file size has ballooned significantly, requiring 100 GB on PC as per Steam.
Borderlands 4 also stirred up some controversy when the initial $80 price tag sparked outrage in the gaming community. Addressing this, Pitchford stated, “If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way.” Later, 2K Games confirmed the price tag was bumped down to $69.99 for the Standard Edition, with Deluxe Edition priced at $99.99, and the Super Deluxe at $149.99, including the Bounty Pack, Vault Hunter Pack, new regions, and story missions.
The Borderlands franchise has sold nearly 93 million units combined. Borderlands 3 is also 2K’s fastest-selling title, with over 22 million units sold to date and 1.1 million units on launch week. With Borderlands 4's open-world design and asynchronous difficulty, tailoring gameplay for each co-op player on the go, it’s a waiting game to see if the upcoming installment retains the franchise’s magic.
