Many gamers appreciate the performance boosts provided by Sony's pricey console. However, others believe that not enough PS5 Pro games take advantage of the system's specs. A developer who shares these sentiments recently commented on the state of PS5 Pro support.
The unfulfilled promise of the PS5 Pro
Spotted by TwistedVoxel, the Kyodai Ltd CEO and co-founder detailed how studios are missing an opportunity. On the ResetEra forums, Ivaylo Koralsky also suggested that the added effort would pay dividends with the PS6.
Koralsky responded to a poster who complained about the lack of PSSR support. The developer argues that the upscaling technology isn't enough to realize the console's potential. PS5 Pro specs include a GPU with faster memory and more compute units. Additionally, the machine's ray tracing effects result in authentic-looking lighting and shadows. However, the Kyodai boss notes how very few PS5 Pro games showcase all of these improvements.
Lead Architect Mark Cerny's goal for the PS5 Pro was to enable higher-resolution gameplay without compromising frame rates. Unfortunately, players are often frustrated when they still have to choose one or the other. Referring to his projects, Koralsky reveals how fully utilizing the console overcomes the limitations of the PS5. One title offers ray-tracing, a 120Hz mode, while aiming for 60 fps.
Why more studios aren't accounting for all of the available PS5 Pro specs is unclear. The console's market share may not be large enough to warrant the investment. To be fair, the system is less than a year old, and an increasing number of games are PS5 Pro Enhanced. Also, the console is not a magic fix for recent titles like Wuchang: Fallen Feathers. The action RPG exhibits many of the same performance shortcomings on multiple platforms.
Koralsky raises the issue of the PS6 to encourage developers to put in the extra work. Expected to be backward compatible with PS5 games, the PS5 Pro can help prepare them for the new console. According to Koralsky, optimized games will perform better on the upcoming system without extensive updates.
