Recently, chatter about a new PlayStation console has become more frequent. The discussions have raised hopes that the PS6 release date may arrive sooner rather than later. Some references to the system even originated from the Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, Hideaki Nishino. However, Mark Cerny, the lead architect of several Sony consoles, now suggests that hardware isn't the company's priority.
Tom's Guide interviewed Cerny, who revealed that AMD FSR 4 upscaling will land on the PS5 Pro in 2026. Later in the article, he explained that "What I'm trying to do is prepare for the next generation of consoles, so my timeframe is multi-year here." Cerny seems more concerned with enhancing existing PlayStation consoles and games through software updates.
The "multi-year" timeframe wording has sparked further debate about the PS6 release date. Based on the past schedule of new PlayStation consoles, most insiders expect the system to arrive in 2027 or 2028. A handheld device that supports PS5 games may also be released around the same time. Cerny's comment implies that the earliest the PS6 could surface is in 2027, but it also may appear later than some fans had anticipated.
Cerny's statement may also contradict a recent investor fireside chat with Hideaki Nishino. The PlayStation boss believes that a large number of gamers would welcome new hardware. After mentioning a "next generation console strategy", Nishino said that "the future of the platform is top of mind".
While some gamers are eager for a new console, others think the PS5 hasn't fulfilled its potential. Among other criticisms, fans have blamed Sony for a lack of exclusive titles. They also question whether there will be enough innovative PlayStation games to justify upgrading to the PS6.
Although it demands a significant investment, the PS5 Pro may be enough of an upgrade for many buyers. Cerny hopes to introduce performance enhancements that make the console even more attractive.
