Sony’s next PlayStation console has been the subject of several leaks over the past couple months. The console cycle refresh, looking at previous generations, is expected in 2027 so we’re still far away from the PS6 but that hasn’t kept fans and industry experts from speculating how powerful it is going to be. On that note, the next PlayStation console is expected to come with 24 GB of RAM, a decent boost over the current spec.
Experts at Digital Foundry, during their latest DF Direct Weekly episode (full clip linked below), were asked about RAM capacity for the next generation consoles. Alexander Battaglia responded by saying that while he is unsure what direction Xbox is headed with the next gen console, Sony will likely include 24 GB of RAM in the PS6. The reason being that PS5 and PS5 Pro are already capable of doing pretty well with 16 GB of RAM so the extra RAM will help with on-hardware machine learning and improved ray tracing.
This amount of RAM upgrade should be enough to justify a next generation traditional console, as Alex calls it, but of course, this is just speculation at this point. Recently, a Zen 6 CPU leak for a “Magnus” APU surfaced online suggesting that the next generation consoles could be powered by it. However, it seems like while that could be true for the next Xbox, or one of the expected Xbox devices, it looks too big and expensive to sit inside the PS6. And, it also doesn’t match the usual codenames that Sony uses.
As for the next Xbox, there could be an upper-tier console that is powered by this Magnus APU based on a 3nm process and come with 36 GB of GDDR7 RAM. Of course, that would lead to a premium price tag, expected to be over $1,500. Last month (June), known leaker Kepler_L2 told fans to expect the next Xbox to be priced over $1,000, but that was due to the multiple storefronts capabilities. That, plus the new APU, could take the price over $1,500.
