A new rumor claims that Sony is preparing a major software upgrade for the PlayStation 5 Pro, potentially timed to coincide with the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. The claim was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @DetectiveSeeds, who attributes the information to an unnamed PlayStation engineer. According to the post, the supposed PS5 Pro performance update is currently targeted for May 2026.
People in the comments did start speculating about a potential 60 FPS update for the GTA 6, wherein the new PS5 Pro update could enable Sony's console to run one of the most highly anticipated titles of all time, GTA 6, at 60 FPS.
Please do note that no one, including Rockstar, 2K, or any other official source, has yet confirmed the exact resolution and frame rate at which GTA 6 will actually run. Speculations of GTA 6 running at a capped 30 FPS come mainly from two reasons.
First being the fact that several of the last games from Rockstar have released with a 30 FPS cap, including GTA IV, GTA V, Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2, and L.A. Noire, just not necessarily in that release date order, though.
And the second being the GTA 6 Trailer 2 itself, which was running on a base PS5 at what appears to be 30 FPS. Digital Foundry even confirmed that the footage is running at around 1440p resolution with ray tracing enabled and is locked at 30 FPS.
In fact, in a recent interview, Mark Cerny revealed that AMD’s RDNA 5 architecture, developed in collaboration with Sony, includes engineering work aimed at future PlayStation hardware. They confirmed that this work is already shaping the PS5 Pro’s graphics pipeline, with features like FSR 4 and PSSR being designed as drop-in upgrades.
While not directly naming a specific update, Cerny’s comments strongly hint that Sony is laying the groundwork for a significant performance enhancement on the PS5 Pro, potentially arriving just in time for major titles like GTA 6.
On Reddit, users in r/PlayStation voiced a mix of anticipation and concern around the PS5 Pro’s rumored FSR 4 support. One user said they hoped “GTA 6 will have a 60 FPS mode exclusively on Pro,” while another warned that expecting a locked 60 FPS is unrealistic given the CPU parity with the base PS5. A more technical commenter noted, “Frame generation is the key here. If they can get to 40 FPS natively, they could generate up to 60-ish.”
Another really interesting comment from Cerny is that his work isn’t just limited to proprietary PlayStation tech, but could also benefit the industry as a whole. Although mere speculation at this point, it could mean that similar performance upgrades derived from this project might be used in future Xbox consoles as well.
If the May 2026 update rumor proves accurate, it could finally make the PS5 Pro genuinely desirable. The console's reception so far has been lukewarm, with users seeing little to no difference in actual gameplay compared to the base PS5. With this update, if true, Sony gets a second chance. However, one can only hope that Sony’s plan to make games like Helldivers playable everywhere on PC, PS5, and Xbox is the only thing it ends up copying from Microsoft.
