GTA V was released in September 2013 and two weeks later, GTA Online came into existence. Since then, it has become one of the largest franchises ever, amassing over $9.5 billion since release. GTA Online is set in the world of GTA V but allows gamers to effectively live virtual lives. They can buy property, race, gamble, organize heists, buy weapons, and more. Now, with the UK imposing various security measures across content, it looks like GTA Online has been affected by it as well.
Leaker Tez2 originally shared the age verification information for GTA Online towards the end of July and now, they have backed those claims with screenshots from the game showing the verification page. One of the screenshots shows the GTA Online homepage with a “Verify Age” notice. Another screenshot of the in-game settings shows Verify Age under Additional Settings with independent options for “Online Access,” “Store Access,” and “Snapmatic Upload.” It is unclear if these are toggles that can be turned off.
The leaker does mention that this is a preview of age assurance in-game and that it is not active yet. This could be a response from Rockstar to the clamp down in the UK where the Online Safety Act demands an age verification for sites that host adult content or content that can be potentially harmful to minors.
That being said, this age verification system in GTA Online could be only for the UK, but it won’t be surprising if Rockstar decides to make it a global mandate.
