A handheld PlayStation console has been rumored for a while now. It is said to arrive alongside the PlayStation 6, which itself is a big mystery at this point. However, a leak from last month that kind of went under the radar hints at the SoC that will be powering the alleged PS6 handheld, and it doesn’t seem to be that powerful, despite claims of the handheld being able to run PS5 games natively.
Sony technically already has a PlayStation handheld in the PlayStation Portal, but this device cannot run games natively, so a true gaming handheld under the PlayStation brand is still the PS Vita from over a decade ago. Since late last year, rumors have been doing the rounds hinting at a new PlayStation portable device that will be a PS6 generation console capable of playing PS5 games natively.
That claim, however, feels like a stretch considering the handheld is said to be powered by a 3nm-based 15W SoC from AMD that may not be powerful enough for the job. The information comes from known AMD leaker Kepler L2 who shared on the NeoGAF forums last month. The leaker’s post was a comment in the “Do you agree with Chatgpt that PS6 portable can match the power of PS5 in all parameters by 2028?” thread where people were discussing the potential capabilities of the rumored PS6 handheld.
As of now, there is no information on when the PS6 handheld or the PS6 will arrive, but the same leaker had shared earlier this year that the SoC is design complete and has entered pre-silicon validation stage with A0 tapeout scheduled for late 2025. According to a report by Wccftech, this could suggest a 2027 launch for the PS6 consoles.
