Sony has revealed that the PlayStation 5 has shipped 77.8 million units globally as of March 31, 2025. Despite a decline in hardware shipments year-over-year, software sales and PlayStation Network engagement are on the rise.

In the latest fiscal report, Sony has stated that PlayStation 5 shipments have reached 77.8 million units across the globe as of March 31st, 2025. This figure includes 2.8 million units shipped in Q4 FY2024 (January to March 2025), down from 4.5 million during the same period in the previous year. As far as the full fiscal year is concerned, PS5 shipments stood at 18.5 million. This is a decline from 20.8 million in FY2023, which indicates a slowdown in hardware momentum.

Despite the dip in console sales, Sony’s Game & Network Services (G&NS) segment has shown strong performance in software, services, and digital content.

Here are some of the highlights from Sony's full FY2024 Q4 supplemental report -

  • Total PS4 + PS5 game units sold in FY2024: 303.3 million (up from 286.4M YoY).
  • 76.1 million software units were sold in Q4 FY2024 alone.
  • First-party game sales dropped to 28.9 million this year (it was 39.7M the previous year).
  • The digital download ratio of full game sales reached 76%, which is up from 70% YoY.
  • Monthly Active Users (MAUs) on PlayStation Network hit 124 million in Q4, peaking at 129 million in Q3 FY2024.
  • G&NS segment revenue: ¥4.67 trillion (~$30.5 billion), a new annual high.
  • Network Services revenue (PS Plus, ads): ¥669.9 billion.
  • Add-on content revenue: ¥1.34 trillion, showing strong engagement with live service titles.

While hardware shipments declined, the platform’s digital growth and recurring revenue streams - especially from add-on content and network services - have helped offset those losses. Further, Sony's ongoing emphasis on software, live services, and digital sales reflects a maturing console lifecycle and a stronger push toward long-term profitability.

PlayStation 5 (curr. $759.69 on Amazon) was launched in 2020 and had the biggest console launch in history. In 2023, the original console models were replaced by the slimmer iterations. And more recently, in 2024, a PS5 Pro with better specs was launched.
