Just a few days after the first reports of a ransom demand targeting Rockstar Games, the situation is growing more serious. According to the BBC, the hacker group ShinyHunters has now announced that it plans to publish the stolen data because its demands were not met. Rockstar has confirmed the incident, but continues to maintain that neither players nor the release of Grand Theft Auto VI will be affected.

Rockstar Games has once again been the target of a cyberattack. As previously reported, the attackers initially demanded a ransom, although the amount remains unknown. Since no payment appears to have been made, ShinyHunters has now said it intends to publish the stolen data, according to the BBC. Rockstar, meanwhile, is trying to downplay the scale of the incident. In a statement to Insider Gaming, a spokesperson said that only “a limited amount of non-material company information” had been accessed in connection with a data breach involving a third-party provider.

When the first reports surfaced, no public leak had yet been confirmed. A follow-up report from Insider Gaming now suggests that some of the data tied to the ShinyHunters incident may already be circulating. According to that report, the material may include financial information related to GTA Online. If that proves accurate, the original threat would already have turned into a real leak.

For players, however, there is still no sign of any direct impact. Rockstar continues to maintain that neither ongoing operations nor the planned November 2026 release of Grand Theft Auto VI are affected. Even so, the incident remains highly sensitive. The company has repeatedly been targeted by cyberattacks in recent years and was already hit by a major leak involving early GTA 6 material back in 2022.
