Metro 2039 confirmed as fourth mainline game

Back-to-back rumours talked about a fourth Metro game dropping on April 16, which also happens to be the rumoured date for the next State of Play from Sony. It has now been officially confirmed to launch as Metro 2039, and it will be revealed on the aforementioned date at 19:00 CET. The linked website appears to be a placeholder, but more details will likely be populated once the game is revealed.
At the time of writing, it is nearly impossible to determine which direction Metro 2039 will take the franchise. The last game, Metro Exodus, finally took us out of the Moscow underground metro into the vast, unforgiving world. It even had a morality system that determined which ending cutscenes played. Overall, Arytom’s story seemed to be done and dusted, and it’ll be interesting to see what becomes of him.
Previous leaks hinted at a return to Moscow. Given Metro 2039 uses the same name structure as the first title in the series (Metro 2033), that seems like a plausible direction. The biggest question, however, is whether we continue playing as Artyom or commandeer someone else. After all, there are quite a few loose ends that need tying up.
If you want to get up to speed with the Metro franchise, the full trilogy (Metro 2033, Metro Last Light and Metro Exodus) is available on Steam for an 85% discount.
