New Metro game could be set for imminent State of Play announcement - here's what to expect

Seven years after the release of the last mainline Metro game, it appears a new title is on the way. While still unconfirmed, word on the grapevine indicates that the studio behind the franchise, 4A Games, could be set to announce the new game shortly.
As shared on X by @AlexandreNGamr, a new Metro game is reportedly set to be announced next week. That coincides quite nicely with Sony's upcoming State of Play event, rumored for April 16 as we reported a few days ago.
As for the game itself, it will likely be the fourth mainline entry in the series, following Metro 2033, Metro Last Light, and Metro Exodus, with the Metro Awakening VR game released in 2024 not widely considered a major release. This game is expected to be a direct sequel to the events of Metro Exodus, potentially featuring a return to the Moscow metro.
A recent leak revealed files from what looks certain to have been a now-canceled Metro title developed around 2023. The game in question is said to have featured a full open world, expanding on the semi-open-world design of Metro Exodus, with Hunter as the protagonist and Bourbon and Khan appearing as side characters. While this project has long been scrapped, it would not be surprising to see the upcoming Metro title borrow elements from it.
Either way, if these reports are anything to go by, more concrete information on the game will be revealed next week. Considering the timeline for Last Light and Exodus, however, it's unlikely this game actually releases before 2028—potentially setting it up to arrive as one of the earliest PlayStation 6 titles.
