GTA 6 release date confidence grows, with PS5 upgrade notice sent to PS4 wishlists

Sony seems as anxious as players are for the GTA 6 release date to arrive. On social media, posters are sharing a new PlayStation Store notification about the Rockstar Games project. Targeting PS4 owners with the title on their wishlists, the company is urging buyers to purchase a PS5.
The PlayStation Store tease
Gamers who don’t own a compatible console can still wishlist the PS Store selection. The message reads “Get a PlayStation 5 today to be ready for when Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026.”
The notification is not a guarantee that the industry will avoid another GTA 6 release date delay. Still, particularly after the PS5 price increase, upgrading is not a decision to take lightly. Any PS4 loyalist who makes the purchase specifically for the game would not welcome a postponement.
Sony also referenced the open-world crime adventure in its May 8th earnings call. It appeared on a slide with first-party PlayStation titles, confirming the game's importance for the holiday season. Some followers also saw this as a sign that marketing for the GTA 6 PS5 version, or pre-orders with a price reveal, will begin shortly.
GTA 6 marketing may have a PS5 focus
Giving gamers more hope, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick remains confident about a November debut. Speaking to Game File, he reiterated that a summer marketing campaign would begin “soon.” In a Bloomberg interview, Zelnick may have also inadvertently confirmed PlayStation-specific promotions.
GTA 6 is not a PS5 exclusive, but platform options are limited. Reports suggest that, amid the memory shortage, Microsoft is struggling to manufacture enough new Xbox consoles. PC users will likely need to wait until at least 2027, with uncertainty surrounding a Switch 2 port. As a result, bolstered by rumored bundles, Sony could enjoy a surge in console sales.
Facing higher component costs, Sony has forecasted a slowdown in hardware revenue. Yet, the situation would be more dire with a third delay of the Rockstar blockbuster. Even with the PS5 price increase, PS4 holdouts may have enough motivation to finally upgrade.
