Accused of monopolistic practices, Sony has agreed to pay $7.8 million in damages to consumers. The PlayStation Store is the only marketplace that sells digital PS4 and PS5 games. Buyers eligible for the payout must have bought a retail voucher for a qualifying title between 2019 and 2023.

Critics who believe the PlayStation Store abuses its dominance have scored a legal victory. A Northern District of California court has approved a preliminary settlement in which Sony would pay out $7.8 million. However, only buyers of select digital games between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, are eligible for a payment.

The Caccuri v. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC lawsuit began in 2021. A previous settlement was actually reached in July 2025, before the judge rejected the agreement. The outcome is still not guaranteed until an October 15th fairness hearing determines it’s fair and reasonable.

During 2019-2023, U.S-based buyers must have purchased a voucher for a qualifying title at a physical location. The PSN Digital Games Settlement site has assembled a list of qualifying titles.

PlayStation lawsuit payouts

The $7,850,000 will not be distributed to most consumers via checks. Divided among 4,407,533 PSN members, account credits should automatically appear if the lawsuit settlement sees final approval. Individuals who receive a payout should receive notification through email. The amount is unlikely to be substantial enough to purchase a new PS4 or PS5 game.

Complaints about the PlayStation Store began after SIE blocked third parties from selling game codes in 2019. There was no longer competition for the marketplace, which critics say led to higher prices. Sony has argued that rivals like Microsoft and Nintendo run similar online storefronts. Still, it’s possible to purchase digital Xbox and Switch titles at retailers.

Even after the Caccuri case concludes, Sony is under legal assault in multiple countries. Notably, the UK PlayStation You Owe Us lawsuit alleges that the PS Store is an anti-competitive closed ecosystem. The plaintiff is seeking more than £2 billion in damages, affecting around 12 million gamers.
