Marathon ESRB rating lists PS4 and Xbox One versions for Bungie extraction shooter

PlayStation fans who refuse to upgrade to the PS5 have received surprising news. The ESRB rating page for Marathon is live, listing some unexpected destinations for the extraction shooter. Despite neither Bungie nor Sony announcing the platforms, the game could come to the PS4, as well as the Xbox One.
There are no indications that a Marathon PS4 or Xbox One version will launch on its March 5th release date. Only PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC players will likely be able to play the title on day one. Still, Sony’s cross-platform push includes bringing live-service games to a wide range of systems. It’s possible that the developers plan to support the older consoles at a later time.

As a Clawsomegamer article notes, there is precedent for previous-gen console ports after launch. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor debuted in April 2023, but did not arrive on the PS4 until September 2024. However, that practice has become increasingly rare. Sony Interactive Entertainment has not shipped a notable first-party PS4 game in the past year.
Marathon would be opposing recent trends
With the PS6 looming, other publishers have also stopped accommodating the PlayStation 4. For the first time in the wrestling series’ history, 2K Games will not release PS4 and Xbox One ports for WWE 2K26. Leaving behind a large player base, HoYoverse is ceasing support for Genshin Impact on the gaming system. Call of Duty games are an exception, but that’s rumored to change in the near future.
The Marathon ESRB listing could be an error. Redditor Bloodgecko reminded fans that the website included PS4 for the 2020 Demon’s Souls remake before making a correction. Since Bungie began developing the extraction shooter as early as 2021, the company may have scrapped the idea.
The other question is whether Marathon PS4 or Xbox One performance would be acceptable. As demonstrated during the server slam, it appears fairly well-optimized on lower-end PCs. Yet even on the PS5 Pro, there is no confirmation of a 120Hz mode, as the studio prioritizes resolution over high refresh rates.
