With impressive visuals and a vast open world, Sony recognized enormous potential in Crimson Desert. Even so, Pearl Abyss decided against becoming a PS5 exclusive game to secure more revenue. As a result, the March 19th Crimson Desert release date will also include the Xbox and PC.

Crimson Desert is widely considered one of the most anticipated games of 2026. While GTA 6 hype is immense, it has the advantage of a simultaneous launch on PC and consoles. However, the title's March 19th release date may not have included Xbox Series X|S if it had accepted an offer for PlayStation exclusivity.

Forbes found the proposal in a Pearl Abyss investor report translated on the ResetEra forums. According to the company, Sony praised the open-world action-adventure project. If its potential partner accepted “favorable terms”, Crimson Desert would have become a PS5 exclusive for one year. PlayStation also requested distribution rights on the PC.

Pearl Abyss explained that under the exclusivity deal, it would likely have had to sacrifice 30% of total profits for platform fees. While the company recognized Sony’s large fanbase, it resolved to self-publish to maximize revenue. The developer has the infrastructure in place to handle the additional responsibilities.

Fans have criticized PlayStation for the lack of single-player PS5 exclusive games. Increasingly, it prefers to fund live-service multiplayer alternatives like Horizon Hunters Gathering. Still, titles focused on solo gameplay have been successful. In fact, when making its pitch, Sony recognized similarities between Crimson Desert and Ghost of Tsushima.

The concept of exclusivity is evolving

Bolstering its catalog, the gaming giant did secure timed exclusivity for S-Game’s Phantom Blade Zero. Yet, more developers are skipping struggling Xbox consoles without incentives. Microsoft itself has pivoted away from exclusivity, even shipping some first-party games on the PS5.

Perhaps more significant is the decision to include Steam on the Crimson Desert release date. Sony has recognized Valve’s increased market share, but may not have launched the game on PCs immediately. Despite being made by a third-party studio, Sony Interactive Entertainment kept Stellar Blade on the PS5 for over a year.
