Sony just announced the death of the PS3 and PS Vita Store

Right after it announced a permanent end to physical disk sales in 2028, Sony has even more harrowing news lined up. This time, it applies to digital games, which, soon, will be the only way one can play anything on a PlayStation console. The PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita digital storefronts will be shuttered permanently by next year. The phased shutdown will begin later this year in select regions, then expand worldwide in July 2027. Sony says the decision stems from the PlayStation Store's transition to modern commerce systems and updated payment processing technologies that the PS3 and PS Vita cannot support.
PlayStation Store access on the PS3 will be discontinued in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua in August 2026, with additional Latin American and Middle Eastern markets following later this year. The global shutdown for both the PS3 and PS Vita is scheduled for July 2027, after which users will no longer be able to purchase games, DLC, or any digital content through the storefront. Exactly how Sony plans to preserve digital-only titles from that era remains a mystery.
Thankfully, players will still be able to re-download previously purchased content "for the foreseeable future," meaning existing digital libraries will remain accessible even after new purchases are disabled. However, it is unclear how long that period will be. The troubling part is that it almost certainly won't be indefinite, and it will only a matter of time before your PS3/PS Vita digital purchases will be worth nothing. Ironically, the only way to access games of what is arguably one of the best eras of the PlayStation platform will be via physical disks.
