Addictive cozy city-building: Why 93% of players love this game

A new city builder has recently launched on Steam – and players are clearly enjoying it. Go-Go Town! not only has more than 2,200 reviews with 93% positive ratings, but also ranks No. 9 in SteamDB's Hot Releases chart. So why is the game proving so popular? Let's take a closer look.

You start by getting your hands dirty

In Go-Go Town!, players take on the role of mayor of a run-down small town that is still a long way from living up to its idyllic tourism slogan. The game features a colorful cartoon art style reminiscent of Animal Crossing and Overcooked. Its biggest twist is that players don't simply issue orders – they actively take part in the work themselves. You'll zip around town on a skateboard, go-kart or the delightfully ridiculous Trinicorncycle, gather resources, manufacture goods and clear away piles of trash.

As the town expands, however, the focus gradually shifts from hands-on work to organization and automation. Satisfied tourists eventually become permanent residents and can take over many of the tasks that players previously handled themselves. The co-op mode, which supports both local and online multiplayer, also appears to be a major hit with players.

Developed together with the community

The successful launch didn't come entirely out of nowhere. Go-Go Town! had been available in Early Access since June 2024, with the developers refining the game alongside the community for more than two years. As a result, the Steam reviews are not based solely on impressions following the 1.0 release on July 17. Players praise the relaxing gameplay, rewarding sense of progression and extensive creative freedom, with many describing the game as highly addictive. One reviewer summed it up by calling it "Animal Crossing meets automation."

Most criticism is directed at the limited endgame content and AI workers that can occasionally behave unreliably. Developed by the Australian studio Prideful Sloth, Go-Go Town! normally costs $27.99. Until July 30, however, it's available with a 25% launch discount, reducing the price to $20.99. A free demo is also available.
