Xbox console sales jump 86% in June, with exclusive games and price increase factors

CEO Asha Sharma has put a greater focus on the Series X|S and upcoming Project Helix. The strategy may be working, with encouraging June Xbox console sales. Mat Piscatella of Circana reports that U.S. buyers purchased 86% more units compared to the previous year. A return to exclusive games and an impending price increase are likely influencers.
Reasons for hope
Microsoft hardware also saw its best results so far in 2026. Some factors make the numbers seem more impressive than they are. Piscatella notes that in June 2025, furious adoption of the new Nintendo Switch 2 dominated the marketplace. At the same time, Xbox systems suffered a particularly bad month, reeling from a May price hike.
Those caveats aside, the Circana analyst praises the performance of Xbox consoles. For an explanation, buyers may have responded enthusiastically to the June 7th Games Showcase. Most notably, Sharma confirmed a return to Xbox exclusive games, headlined by Gears of War: E-Day.

Critics had argued that without unique software, there is less reason not to choose a PS5 or Switch 2 instead. That said, the only current exclusive in the top 10 for June game sales is Forza Horizon 6, ranking 6th. Gamers could expect that additional appealing first-party titles will emerge soon.
The fact that another Xbox console price increase looms on August 1st also can’t be ignored. Similar MSRP adjustments for the latest Nintendo handheld and PS5 produced a temporary bump. Still, Microsoft made the unwelcome announcement on June 25, when the Circana data includes the entire month.
A troubled gaming economy
The trend for the gaming industry as a whole isn’t as encouraging. Hardware spending tapered off by 62% year over year. Relative to its launch month, Switch 2 console sales dropped by that same percentage. Meanwhile, Sony’s PS5 continues its decline, falling by 43%.
Microsoft made up ground, but its gaming systems still sit in third place. For context, Welfare of the Install Base forums estimates that the Switch 2 moved 348K units, with the PS5 at 169K and the Xbox Series X|S at 123K.
