Xbox CEO doesn't dismiss The Elder Scrolls 6 releasing as a console exclusive game

Microsoft will decide which candidates launch as Xbox exclusive games on a case-by-case basis. With The Elder Scrolls 6 release date possibly years away, it has time to consider PS5 or PS6 support. In a new Gamescom 2026 interview, the BBC asked CEO Asha Sharma about the company’s plans for the open-world RPG.

All options are on the table

When addressing console exclusivity for the Elder Scrolls game, Sharma didn’t provide a definitive answer. Instead, she explained, “Every platform needs some form of exclusive experiences and content.” The executive mentioned Gears of War: E-Day as one project that could drive players to the Xbox ecosystem.

According to the CEO, facing declining profits, Microsoft must also protect the health of its gaming business. Software unique to Xbox consoles gives buyers a reason to purchase the hardware over a PS5. On the other hand, abandoning a multiplatform philosophy threatens to curtail publishing revenue.

Despite the BBC bringing up the Bethesda title again, Sharma said only, “It's a beautiful game.” That leaves fans to speculate about platform options for The Elder Scrolls 6 release date.

A new Windows Central article discusses the Gamescom interview. Jez Corden argues that Microsoft should ship TES6 as an Xbox exclusive. He notes that Windows PC and handheld owners would still have access. Cloud gaming is another way to bring the Skyrim successor to more devices.

System selling exclusives?

Corden admits that sacrificing the PlayStation market results in lower sales. Even so, it would be the best incentive yet to embrace the Series X or the upcoming Project Helix. Many fans believe that Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution aren’t potential console sellers.

Comments from Phil Spencer in 2021 suggested that The Elder Scrolls 6 was intended to arrive as an Xbox exclusive. His stance later evolved, and since leaving the company, the brand has reconsidered its approach to first-party efforts.

With Sharma praising a newer build, TES6 may not be that far off. A supposed Bethesda contractor also recently leaked that The Elder Scrolls 6 could have a late 2027 release date. Regardless, Microsoft can either define its strategy more clearly or reverse course by the launch window.
