Anyone who prefers RPGs that let them decide for themselves where to go and what to do may find plenty to enjoy in Gedonia. The open-world RPG was only released in October 2022, but its gameplay mechanics are reminiscent of old-school role-playing games. Anyone who wants to check it out can currently get Gedonia for $1.49 instead of $14.99 thanks to a 90% discount on Steam – according to SteamDB, its lowest price to date.

The story starts out rather uneventfully: Players take on the role of an ordinary adventurer who leaves his home village in search of a better life in Gedonia's vast fantasy world. During his travels, however, he encounters strange events that point to a greater threat to the entire world. While the story provides a common thread, it is not necessarily the heart of the game. Instead, the focus is on the freedom Gedonia gives its players.

This becomes apparent right from character creation. Instead of committing to a specific class, players distribute skill points to create their own playstyle. The hero can venture through the world as a heavily armored warrior, mage, archer, assassin or summoner, for example. Beyond that, there is plenty to do. Players can explore the open world – on foot or on mounts –, join different factions, recruit companions and venture into dungeons filled with enemies, puzzles, bosses and, of course, loot. Those who want to can also play Gedonia on the Steam Deck.

The adventure is not without its rough edges, however. Gedonia was largely created by a single developer – and it shows: Players criticize stiff animations, weak voice acting, a sometimes empty game world and an unbalanced combat system. Nevertheless, 86% of nearly 4,000 Steam reviews are positive. Players apparently find it easier to forgive a lack of polish in an indie game – especially when it comes from a solo developer. The game also has its strengths: Players praise the freedom it offers, the large open world and the numerous build options. For fans of open-world RPGs, Gedonia may therefore be well worth a look.
