Oblivion Remastered Switch 2 sold out on release date, showing appeal of physical games

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Switch 2 cartridge remains exceedingly scarce. After pre-orders sold out, many retailers have no stock on its November 11th release date. While frustrating, physical game supporters believe it justifies their opposition to an all-digital future.

Limited enough to be numbered?

On June 30th, handheld owners learned the Oblivion Remastered release date for Switch 2 consoles. Pre-orders began at storefronts, which ended in disappointment for many fans. The situation hasn’t improved in the weeks since. In the U.S., the modernized open-world RPG is unavailable at Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop.

The publisher may be producing a limited run of the physical game, contributing to the shortage. Amid the storage and memory crisis, the pricey 64 GB cartridges Nintendo offers have likely become more expensive. Nevertheless, Bethesda rejected cheaper but less desirable formats.

Originally, Bethesda embraced the code-in-box solution for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Switch 2 port. It later reversed course, settling on the cartridge alternative. Buyers also celebrated the fact that the 61.5 GB title is not on a Game-Key Card, eliminating large downloads.

Nintendo's place in a digital world

Sony’s decision to abandon PS5 discs and transition to digital games in 2028 has sparked protests. The company shared statistics showing that shoppers overwhelmingly gravitate toward the PlayStation Store. Yet, Nintendo revealed that in the 1st quarter of FY2027, 38.5% of sales were for physical releases. That share is higher than Sony’s mark of under 20%.

Although Xbox may launch a disc-to-digital program, Nintendo is considered the last hope for collectors. The gaming giant has long enjoyed support from loyalists who buy, sell, and trade their acquisitions. It also prioritizes partnerships with retailers, despite the eShop becoming more popular.

Unfortunately, players may not be as thrilled by the performance of Oblivion Remastered. Initial impressions highlighted frame-rate drops that interrupt gameplay. However, the stuttering is common on the Xbox, PS5, and PC versions and not specific to the Switch 2 game.
