Mojang Studios has confirmed the release date for the Switch 2 version of Minecraft. It will bring some visual upgrades, but it is unclear whether it will be a free upgrade or paid.

Following the ESRB rating that showed up early in June, Mojang Studios has now confirmed the launch date for the native Switch 2 version of Minecraft. The game is currently playable on the handheld, but there is no ‘next-gen’ version yet; that’s about to change in a couple of months.

The official Minecraft account on X shared the news yesterday (August 5), stating that the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Minecraft will launch on October 27. The upgrade will bring a few improvements to the game, like ‘Vibrant Visuals’ being set as the default experience. This includes enhanced lighting effects, shadows, and more. The devs clarify that Vibrant Visuals will not be available in split-screen mode and when playing some of the Marketplace Worlds.

Furthermore, the Super Mario Mash-Up pack will also be getting the upgrade, allowing players to explore Peach’s castle and Delfino Plaza with enhanced visual fidelity.

At this point, it is unclear whether those who own the game on the Nintendo Switch will have to repurchase it for the Switch 2, or if it will be a free upgrade. More details will be shared in the coming weeks.
