Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Switch 2 Edition launches July 30

Nintendo and developer Monolith Soft are rolling out Nintendo Switch 2 upgrades across the Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy, and the second entry gets its turn on July 30, 2026. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launches digitally on the Nintendo eShop that day, bringing 4K visuals, a new Rare Blade, and a reworked mercenary battle mode to Rex and Pyra's search for paradise.
The first game in the series, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, already made its digital debut on June 9, 2026. Its physical release lands July 30, the same day XC2 goes digital.
Visual performance and resolution boosts
Both titles use the Switch 2's extra processing power to fix long-standing technical limitations from their original Switch releases. Players get a target of 60 frames per second alongside 4K resolution in TV mode and 1080p in handheld mode. The upgrades extend to each game's expansion content, Future Connected for the first game and Torna – The Golden Country for the second, smoothing out exploration across the Bionis and the Cloud Sea of Alrest.
Torna's physical release also gets a free update on July 30, enabling the same 4K/60fps boost on Switch 2. Digital owners of Torna as part of the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Expansion Pass need the separate Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack to unlock the same visuals, since the pass and the Switch 2 upgrade are sold and applied independently.
New gameplay modes and traversal features
Each game adds exclusive content on top of the technical overhaul. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition adds the Ether Jet, a high-speed vehicle for covering the game's vast areas quickly. It powers the new Nopon Grand Prix mode, which adds timed and score-based races across familiar terrain. Heart-to-Heart scenes are now fully voiced in English and Japanese for the first time, and new party outfits are unlockable as rewards.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 adds Merc Assault, an action battle mode that lets players choose up to six Blades and control them directly during mercenary missions, switching between them mid-battle. The update also introduces MOMO, a new Rare Blade crossing over from the Xenosaga series, who swaps between Real and Imaginary forms to change her elemental affinity. MOMO comes with her own Blade quest, The Home of the Soul. New equipment designs for Pyra and Mythra, earned through Merc Assault, carry over into cutscenes as well as exploration.
Both Switch 2 Editions add amiibo support, a first for either game. Scanning compatible amiibos grants EXP, SP, AP, or collectibles, with a small chance at exclusive equipment tied to the Switch 2 upgrade.
