Rising console prices could make cloud gaming more attractive – but according to players, Amazon Luna still has a long way to go.
Amazon believes console prices climbing toward $1,000 could finally make cloud gaming a mainstream option. While many players agree with the logic, they also question whether Amazon Luna is ready, given its limited game library.

Cloud gaming was once seen as the future of the gaming industry, but so far it has failed to seriously challenge traditional consoles and gaming PCs. According to Jeffrey Gattis, General Manager of Gaming at Amazon Games, that could soon change. Speaking to The Game Business, Gattis said cloud gaming has long been "a solution in search of a problem." As long as consoles remain relatively affordable, he argues, most players have little reason to switch entirely to game streaming.

If current concerns prove true and future consoles such as the PlayStation 6 and the next-generation Xbox approach the $1,000 price point, Gattis believes far more consumers will start looking for cheaper alternatives. In that scenario, cloud gaming could become significantly more attractive, as players would no longer need to invest in expensive hardware. Amazon Luna, for example, can be accessed easily through Fire TV, smartphones and tablets.

Community doubts Luna is ready

Reddit users generally agree with Amazon's core argument. Several commenters say the rising prices of current-generation consoles have already discouraged them from buying new hardware, making cloud gaming an increasingly appealing alternative. However, many don't see Amazon Luna as the obvious choice.

The biggest criticism is Luna's limited game library, especially after Amazon discontinued its integrated game store and third-party library integrations in June. As a result, users can no longer purchase individual games directly or take advantage of linked game libraries, significantly reducing the platform's flexibility. Players are now largely limited to the Prime Gaming catalog. While that lineup includes notable titles such as Control and Indiana Jones, many users argue it still falls well short of serving as a true replacement for a modern game console.

Many players therefore believe Amazon shouldn't rely solely on rising console prices to drive adoption. Instead, the company will also need to make Luna more attractive again by expanding its game catalog and offering more flexible purchasing options. After all, competing cloud gaming services such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW already provide much larger game libraries and greater flexibility.
