ZeniMax Online Studios has revised The Elder Scrolls Online’s roadmap following major Microsoft layoffs, delaying Update 52 and other planned content into 2027 while shifting its focus from fixed deadlines to quality. Game Director Nick Giacomini reassured players that ESO will continue, supported by closer collaboration with Bethesda Game Studios, with Update 51 now scheduled for September 28, 2026.

ZeniMax Online Studios' massively popular MMORPG, The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), is facing one of the most difficult periods in its 12-year history. Following Microsoft's latest large-scale Xbox restructuring, which saw most affected staff notified on July 6, ZeniMax has been hit especially hard. A Maryland WARN notice first reported by Game Developer accounts for 379 layoffs across the company's Maryland offices: 213 at ZeniMax Online Studios, the developer behind The Elder Scrolls Online, and a further 166 at ZeniMax Media's Rockville site, which also houses Bethesda Game Studios. The cuts take effect on September 4, 2026.

With its development team sharply reduced, ZeniMax Online has had to revisit its plans and adjust its production schedule. Even so, The Elder Scrolls Online is set to continue. In a community letter published on July 30, Game Director Nick Giacomini confirmed that ESO is here to stay and that the studio will work more closely with Bethesda Game Studios to keep future content updates moving.

Giacomini took over as ESO Game Director in August 2025, when the previous Game Director, Rich Lambert, moved up to the studio-level role of Studio Game Director. Lambert's own tenure was cut short by the recent layoffs, a fact he confirmed himself on a Twitch stream shortly after the announcement. Studio head Joe Burba, executive producer Susan Kath, and production director Ala Diaz lost their roles in the same round, leaving Giacomini to run ZeniMax Online alongside business operations lead Josh Henderson.

In his letter to the Elder Scrolls community, Giacomini addressed the changes directly, acknowledged a period of organizational upheaval and the departure of teammates who helped shape the game, and thanked them for their contributions.

Elder Scrolls Online "Here to stay"

He then shifted his focus to ZeniMax Online Studios' dedication to ESO and what is coming next. "ESO is here to stay," Giacomini wrote, adding that the team's focus has not changed and remains on growing The Elder Scrolls Online and building on a world millions of players call home.

Giacomini also framed the arrangement with Bethesda Game Studios as a new chapter of collaboration across the wider Elder Scrolls franchise, one he said would create fresh opportunities to share ideas, align efforts, and deliver better experiences for players. What that means in practice has not been spelled out.

Earlier in 2026, The Elder Scrolls Online moved away from its annual chapter expansion model and adopted a roughly three-month seasonal content update strategy, announced in January. Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk arrived on April 2, followed by Season One: Return of the Thieves Guild on July 8, which runs until October 21.

After the restructuring, Giacomini said the studio is now prioritizing quality over fixed calendar dates. As a result, the original late-2026 roadmap has been revised. Update 52, previously slated for the fourth quarter of 2026, now moves to January 2027 and is expected to bring the new Jerall Pass PvP zone and Skyrim's Dynamic Encounters: Rimegales. The Crimson Veldt trial, a 12-player encounter introducing mounted combat that was due to land alongside Update 51 in September, has slipped into 2027 with no month attached, as has the next Class and Combat refresh. The studio says it is weighing interim adjustments for classes still waiting on their full overhaul.

Update 51, meanwhile, is now scheduled for September 28, 2026, one week later than its original September 21 date. It introduces the long-awaited Rumors system and the Nowhere Vault, a permanent puzzle-focused activity set in a realm between realms, along with a slate of player experience improvements: achievement pinning, a customizable HUD on keyboard platforms, Antiquities changes, continued hybridization work across combat and buff systems, additional Transmute Stations in Cyrodiil, and assorted quality-of-life fixes. Three-sided Battlegrounds also return permanently on the same date.
