Nintendo has announced a major sales milestone for the Switch 2. The console has sold over 3.5 million units within the first four days of its launch-not particularly surprising, given it was a long-overdue update to an already popular console. That figure will undoubtedly rise in the coming months once the console hits more markets.
Essentially, the Nintendo Switch 2 is on track to sell most handheld consoles sold in the past three years. IDC (via The Verge) estimates the ROG Ally, Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion Go and MSI Claw collectively moved about 6 million units since 2022. While the 4.5 million figure is undoubtedly impressive, the Switch 2 has a long way to go. Its predecessor sold about 150 million units in its lifetime, a few million short of the 160 million record set by the PlayStation 2.
The Nintendo Switch 2's runaway success has trickled down to an unlikely partner: Samsung Foundry. Samsung's chip making division was struggling to stay afloat due to lack of demand and poor yields. The Tegra T239 SoC powering the console-manufactured on Samsung's 8 nm node- is expected to generate $1.2 billion in revenue. Plus, Nintendo could leverage its 5 nm node for a future 'performance enhanced' version of the Switch 2.
