Experts say PS+ cancellations won't affect Sony's decision, but gamers disagree

Sony has received major backlash over its decision to kill physical discs, which will likely become a trend that the rest of the industry follows. Of course, it’s a financial decision, and we recently saw how much more profitable physical is over digital for Sony. Moreover, experts have now also stated that no matter the outrage, Sony will not reverse its decision, but gamers are standing strong.
In the recent Daily Fix episode, IGN shared comments made by Dr. Serkan Toto, a Japan Game Market Consultant, who claimed that cancelling PlayStation Plus subscriptions will not force Sony to change its decision. The analyst explained that out of the 50 million PS Plus subscribers, even if 500,000 decide to cancel, that’s just 1% of the pool, which wouldn’t make that much of a difference to Sony, at least not enough to force a rollback.
This comes at a time when subscribers have started cancelling their memberships en masse, and Sony is offering them a 50% discount to stay. Furthermore, the Save Physical Games petition has now crossed 250,000 signatures, which shows that gamers want to stand and fight. Even the comments on IGN’s post are filled with gamers holding their ground and encouraging others to cancel their subscriptions as well. The idea being ‘hit them (Sony) where it hurts, their wallets.’
Sony has remained silent over the backlash as it waits for the smoke to settle. Following Sony’s decision, there is also speculation that Microsoft will follow suit, and that Project Helix will not have a disc drive, at least not natively. The company is believed to be uncertain on its stance, for now.
