Sony FX5 full-frame cinema camera leaks days before launch

The Sony FX3 was released in February 2021. In 2025, Sony finally unveiled the more affordable FX2 ($2,199 on Amazon). According to the latest information from and SonyAlphaRumors, a successor to the FX3 will finally be released on July 22 at 3:00 p.m. London time. Contrary to previous expectations, it will not be marketed as the FX3 II, but rather as the FX5.
The higher model number is expected to come with a higher price tag, but buyers should also receive significantly more advanced features. Most notably, Sony is set to replace the 12.9-megapixel sensor with a brand-new 16.6-megapixel full-frame sensor. This sensor offers three base ISO settings, enabling videos with high dynamic range and low image noise even in low-light conditions. The higher resolution also allows for recording 5K open-gate video in the 3:2 aspect ratio.
The Sony FX5 reportedly offers numerous options for recording 4K video to a memory card without needing an external recorder. The Bionz XR 2 processor is said to enable more reliable, faster AI autofocus similar to that of the Sony A7r VI. The flip-out display is reportedly growing from 3 inches to 3.5 inches, and the user interface and menus are also said to be redesigned. An electronic viewfinder can be purchased separately and attached as needed. No images of the camera are available yet, but the body is said to be slightly larger than that of the Sony FX3.
