Sony launches FX5 full-frame 5K cinema camera with 15+ stop latitude
The Sony FX5 camera is the company's latest model in their Cinema Line series for professional filmmakers and creators, delivering open-gate 5K60p videos from a 18.2 MP full-frame Exmor RS sensor. The camera is an update of the 4K FX3 launched in 2021.
The FX5 delivers on the major points 4K filmmakers want in a cinema camera. The large 35 mm sensor is capable of delivering over 15 stops of latitute in S-Log3 mode, with selectable base ISOs of 800, 4000, and 12800, that includes AI-powered noise reduction technology thanks to its BIONZ XR2 image processing engine. Selectable dual-gain shooting further expands the image latitude across the camera's ISO 320 to 409,600 range.
The camera is compatible with Sony E-mount lenses, including anamorphic lenses (like these on Amazon) in open-gate mode, and shots are stabilized with an optical 5-axis in-body image stabilizer coupled with selectable Dynamic Active Mode digital image stabilization. Hybrid (phase and contrast) autofocus across 759 points with AI human, animal, and bird detection helps ensure focused shots with fast-moving subjects.
Videos can be saved in 16-bit Sony X-OCN compressed RAW files to cheaper SDXC or pricier CFexpress 2 Type A memory cards (like this one sold on Amazon) in either of the dual slots. Recordings can be viewed with the 3.5-inch multi-angle LCD with 2.76 million dots or the optional 0.58-inch OLED with 7.07 million dots and 90 degree tilt.
The 1046 g (2.3 lbs.) ILME-FX5 does not come with an XLR handle, while the ILME-FX5B does. The handle comes with a Sony Multi-Interface (MI) shoe along with two XLR/TRS jacks for use with external microphones (like this MI microphone on Amazon) and accessories. Up to four channels of 96 kHz, 32-bit float audio can be recorded along with the video, helping ensure clip- and distortion-free recordings.
As expected for a professional digital film camera, the Sony FX5 supports time code sync as well as networked camera operation over wired and wireless connections. The camera comes with a LAN port, two USB ports, and an HDMI port in addition to 802.11ax Wi-Fi. The camera also supports networked RTSP 4K livestreaming.
The Sony FX5 is expected to ship mid-August at an MSRP of $5,499.99 (ILME-FX5, with XLR handle) or $4,899.99 (ILME-FX5B, without XLR handle) (819,000 or 739,000 yen respectively in Japan). Readers can look for its arrival in the Sony store on Amazon.
