The Sony RX1R II hit the market back in 2015, and finally, one of the world's most exciting compact cameras is getting a successor. The brand-new Sony RX1R III doesn't have a new concept, as Sony still pairs a full-frame sensor with a 35mm f/2 Zeiss lens and an exceptionally compact body.
The camera measures just 4.4 x 2.6 x 3.4 inches and weighs 17.6 oz. This makes the RX1R III significantly more compact than the Leica Q3, which measures 5.1 x 3.1 x 3.7 inches and weighs 26.2 oz. Compared to its predecessor, Sony primarily highlights the new higher-resolution 61-megapixel sensor and the Bionz XR image processor, which also offers much faster autofocus and AI subject tracking.
Furthermore, the camera can record 4K videos at 30 frames per second and 1080p slow-motion at 120 fps. The lens can focus on objects as close as 9.4 inches. Meanwhile, the integrated electronic viewfinder utilizes an OLED panel with 2.36 million dots, and the Sony NP-FW50 battery (from $75 on Amazon) promises a battery life of 300 photos. The design of the magnesium body hasn’t changed much, but the new handgrip is intended to improve ergonomics, and the mode dial and hot shoe now sit flush with the camera's top plate.
Price and availability
