Sony has just announced a more affordable alternative to the FX3, which is expected to offer a robust feature set at a slightly lower price. The camera comes with a 33MP full-frame sensor, an OLED viewfinder and numerous video capabilities.

The brand-new Sony FX2 looks similar to the older Sony FX3 (from $3,898 on Amazon) at first glance, but Sony has made some significant changes. First and foremost, Sony has added an electronic viewfinder with a 0.5-inch OLED panel and 3.68 million dots, which can be flipped up to make it easier to take shots from certain angles.

The 33MP full-frame sensor can be used with the mechanical shutter to capture photos, which can also be saved as RAW files. However, the camera's focus is clearly on video. Specifically, the Sony FX2 records 4K video at 60 frames per second and the Super 35 format. The entire sensor area can only be used for 4K at 30 or 24 fps, or for 1080p slow-motion at 120 fps. Videos are recorded in XAVC S-I with data rates up to 600 Mbps, and S-Log3 can enable a dynamic range of more than 15 stops.

With S-Log3, the sensor uses a dual base ISO of 800 and 4,000 to ensure minimal image noise in low-light conditions. The 1.5-lbs camera utilizes the Sony NP-FZ100 battery, which is expected to provide 90 minutes of video recording time. It's also possible to power the camera via USB-C. Lastly, the Sony FX2 features two SD card readers, with one of those slots supporting CFexpress Type A cards.

Price and availability

The Sony FX2 is expected to launch in July 2025 for €3,199 and £2,699 without a handgrip. The kit with handgrip will be priced at €3,699 and £3,149. More details on the new Sony camera can be found on the official product page.
