Sony is offering some PlayStation Plus members a free year of PS Plus Premium

Sony has been facing heavy criticism ever since it announced that new PlayStation games will no longer receive physical releases starting in January 2028. The decision led some players to cancel their PlayStation Plus subscriptions, and shortly afterward, it was reported that Sony was offering discounts to users who were trying to cancel. And now, it appears that some members are receiving an even better offer.
A user on the r/PlayStationPlus subreddit recently shared that they are being offered a free 12-month upgrade to PlayStation Plus Premium. According to the screenshot they posted, the PlayStation Store shows a 100% discount on a one-year Premium upgrade.
However, there is one detail worth noting. The same user explained that when they actually try to redeem the offer, they are asked to pay a one-time fee of $26.23 plus tax to upgrade to PlayStation Plus Premium, which seems to be related to the remaining time left in their current billing cycle.
According to the post, the user's current PlayStation Plus Essential subscription expires on July 31. Because there are only around two weeks left before the renewal date, Sony appears to be charging the user only for upgrading those remaining days to Premium. Once the subscription renews on July 31, the free 12-month Premium promotion would begin, with the next renewal scheduled for July 31, 2027.
At the moment, it is unclear how widely this promotion is being offered or what criteria Sony is using to select eligible accounts. The offer does not appear to be available to everyone, and there has been no official announcement from PlayStation regarding the promotion.
