PlayStation user randomly received 30 months of free PS Plus Premium and initially thought it was a scam

Sony has offered different PlayStation Plus discounts and promotions to users in the past, with one player even receiving a full year of PlayStation Plus Premium for free. However, one PlayStation user appears to have gotten an even better reward, although they initially thought the whole thing was some kind of scam.

Over on Reddit, user roguewarriorpoet recently shared that they randomly received a code for 30 months of free PlayStation Plus Premium back in January 2025, and until yesterday, they weren’t sure how they ended up receiving it. 

When the email first arrived, they suspected it could be a phishing attempt, but they still decided to enter the code, thinking there was little to lose. To their surprise, the code worked, and their PlayStation account has remained completely fine since then.

As it turns out, the code wasn't actually random. The user had been selected as one of the winners of PlayStation Plus' 30th Anniversary Campaign, with the prize being 30 months of PS Plus Premium.

The confusing part is that the user did not remember entering the giveaway. However, it’s not their fault, as Sony's campaign did not work like a typical giveaway where you have to fill out a form, comment on a social media post, or answer questions. Instead, users could qualify by purchasing a one, three, or 12-month PlayStation Plus Premium or Deluxe subscription and then playing any game from the Classics Catalogue. Existing Premium or Deluxe subscribers could also enter simply by playing one Classics Catalogue game.

That means the user may have unknowingly entered the campaign just by playing a game from the Classics Catalogue and ended up being one of the winners. So while the email looked completely random at first, there was actually a reason behind it. It just took the user more than a year to discover why they received such a generous PlayStation Plus Premium reward.
