Early PS Plus games update may signal PlayStation State of Play or PS5 disc news

The latest PS Plus games announcement took fans by surprise. Typically, Sony confirms the Essential tier selections on the last Wednesday of every month. Now, speculation is growing that the company was clearing its schedule for another update. A PlayStation State of Play or a response to protests over the death of PS5 discs are possibilities.
Just a coincidence?
It may seem insignificant for Sony to choose Tuesday to disclose PS Plus games. However, the gaming giant has been consistent in waiting for the following day. Then, players download the Essential titles on the first Tuesday of the following month.
There have been exceptions, but none would apply to current theories. The company broke tradition earlier this year on Tuesday, May 26th, when it showcased the June selections ahead of schedule. It simultaneously unveiled the Days of Play sales, which started on the 27th.
Also worth noting, news regarding PS5 games for April 2026 didn’t come until the month had begun. Still, the decision avoided a long gap between the Wednesday PlayStation Blog post and the first Tuesday in April.
On September 24th 2025, Sony deliberated until the 5 PM EST/11 PM CEST State of Play broadcast to discuss the October PS Plus games. Regardless, console owners again learned about the titles on a Wednesday.
A State of Play on short notice
PlayStation has rarely held an event after giving only a few hours' notice. Still, it shadow dropped a same-day spectacle on September 24th, 2019. It was a brief showcase with trailers and news rather than a full-length presentation. That may be the most realistic scenario if it picks July 29th for the next stream.
September usually features a longer event, but a 15-20 minute Phantom Blade Zero State of Play is lurking. The S-GAME studio promised to exhibit more from the action RPG once pre-orders opened in the summer.
Gamers upset about PlayStation reducing PS5 disc production in early 2028 are imploring Sony to acknowledge them. Rumors suggest that the company intends to ignore the protests from physical game advocates. Yet, as its social media accounts continue to be flooded with protests, the impact on marketing may be more severe than anticipated.
