DriveClub breaks free of PS4 limits as patch unlocks 8K resolution, 60 FPS, and uncapped frame rates on PC

More than a decade after DriveClub launched as a PS4 first-party exclusive, its photorealistic visuals still impress players today. Sony shut down Evolution Studios, the developer behind the game, in March 2016 after technical issues, a rough launch, and costly delays drove up its budget. Now, more than ten years later, players can finally experience DriveClub closer to the way it was meant to be played, though not through Sony.

A new patch for the PS4 emulator ShadPS4 lets players run DriveClub on PC at resolutions up to 8K, a staggering leap beyond its intended 1080p cap, at which it remains locked on both PS4 and PS5.

Despite being delisted from the PlayStation Store, backward compatibility still works on PS5 if you already own the game digitally or have a physical PS4 disc. Load times are faster, but the experience otherwise remains unchanged, largely because Evolution Studios shut down nearly a decade ago.

DriveClub has recently enjoyed a wave of nostalgic popularity. Released in October 2014, the game had a troubled PS4 launch marked by server instability, which broke its social “club” features for weeks and contributed to mediocre early reviews.

Evolution Studios worked to repair the game’s reputation with post-launch updates that added impressive weather effects, a photo mode, and a steady stream of new content. Game director Paul “Rushy” Rustchynsky later addressed DriveClub’s launch and defended the decision to target 1080p at 30 FPS rather than 60 FPS in a June 2014 interview with Edge Magazine.

Rustchynsky reflected on DriveClub and the studio’s legacy during the game’s post-launch cycle. He said the team had tested the game extensively before launch and that “we had confidence that everything was ready” going into release.

An eventual masterpiece that still holds its own 

Despite the criticism and early doubts, Evolution Studios eventually turned DriveClub into one of the PS4’s most visually striking racers before the studio was shuttered in 2016. Sony never followed up with a DriveClub reboot or PS5 remaster, leaving many players to look to ShadPS4 instead.

On the technical side, the new ShadPS4 patch pushes DriveClub well beyond its original limits, allowing the game to scale to 1440p, 4K, and even 8K with an uncapped frame rate and a 60 FPS mode. It is a monumental upgrade over the original 1080p, 30 FPS PS4 presentation.

The DriveClub resolution patch for ShadPS4 comes from modder Kravickas on ModDB, who built on the community’s earlier efforts to increase the game’s resolution. New gameplay footage captured on an RTX 4080 paired with an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D shows what DriveClub can look like when given room to run at an 8K resolution. The result is sharper, cleaner, and more realistic than the jagged, blurry image quality of the original PS4 release.

Players can also disable motion blur in-game, a visual effect Evolution previously used to help convey speed at 30 FPS. With DriveClub now capable of running at uncapped frame rates on ShadPS4, that trade-off matters far less.
