More than 550,000 outdoor power tools sold in the US have been recalled following reports that the batteries can overheat and pose a fire risk when charged via USB-C. Consumers are advised to stop using the affected charging method and submit a claim to get a free replacement.

Over 550,000 Kobalt-branded yard power tools and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries sold via Lowe’s, a home improvement retailer in the US, have been recalled because of a potential fire hazard. Issued by Greenworks Tools in cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall extends to a range of 24V and 48V outdoor equipment that have USB-C rechargeable batteries. Affected products include string trimmers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, chainsaws, pruning saws and power cleaners. A complete list of affected products and their model numbers be found here.

The issue occurs when the batteries are charged via their USB-C ports while still inserted in the tools. Under these conditions, the batteries can short-circuit, increasing the risk of smoke, sparks or fire. To date, Greenworks has received 34 reports involving overheating batteries, although no injuries or property damage have been reported. The recalled items were sold at Lowe’s stores nationwide between January and May 2026, with prices ranging from approximately $20 to $482.

Consumers affected by the recall are advised to follow these instructions for submitting a claim. The company will provide a charger adapter, updated instructions, a warning label and prepaid return shipping for the recalled batteries.
