Nintendo patents Switch 2 dock that connects to first Switch for charging and video

The official Switch 2 dock isn’t as versatile as some buyers had hoped. However, a newly discovered Nintendo patent could reduce clutter in living rooms. Despite the advancing age of the original Switch, the accessory would also be compatible with the last-gen console.
A more flexible dock
Nintendo Patents Watch on Bluesky shared the filing made in China on July 10th. The document reveals that the device’s capabilities change depending on the handheld. With the Switch 2, a higher-resolution video output is sent to displays. A USB 3.0 data mode would also become active.
Since the older system doesn’t support 4K, the accessory outputs a lower-resolution signal. Similarly, the data connection adapts to match the USB 2.0 spec.

The new Switch 2 dock has cooling functionality optimized for both handhelds. Nintendo’s patent illustrates how a fan blows at either higher or lower speeds. Unlike the latest first-party gear, the fan doesn't just enhance airflow around the dock, directing cool air at the console itself.
Why invent anything new for the Switch?
Fans may find it curious that the gaming giant’s R&D department is still focused on Switch 1. The manufacturer declined to make its battery easier to replace to comply with EU right-to-repair regulations. As a result, sales will cease in Europe after February 2027. Nevertheless, support for the system, including some new games, will continue for the foreseeable future.
Like other patents, it’s possible that the company has already moved on from the concept. It’s notoriously protective of its ideas, even when they are unlikely to have any immediate benefits.
If the Switch 2 dock alternative does become a reality, multi-console households will celebrate. Unfortunately, it’s unclear if the accessory would enable VRR, addressing a shortcoming of the existing solution. A recent job listing suggested that Nintendo was still researching potential fixes.
