After the Switch 2 launched, some buyers immediately went on the hunt for a second dock. Unfortunately, the official accessory has already suffered two price increases, now costing $124.99. While there is a large selection of third-party alternatives, a new firmware update has caused some to malfunction. However, a few manufacturers have already responded by releasing workarounds.
Shortly after the handheld’s release date, The Verge tested several potential Switch 2 docks. Most candidates failed to communicate properly with the console, disabling video output. The problem appears related to encrypted messages sent through the USB-C connection.
As it turned out, most companies found ways to replicate the official accessory’s behavior. Buyers could choose from a slew of more affordable and compact USB-C to HDMI adapters. Still, there was always the chance that a Switch 2 firmware update could spoil the party. Sure enough, gamers began reporting issues after the recent 21.0.0 update.
Not all unofficial Switch 2 docks are affected
In one example posted on Reddit, a popular Switch 2 dock from Siwiqu was affected. Chris2112 explains that he purchased the dock in July and had no issues. Sadly, several months later, that is no longer the case. The gamer suspects that Nintendo’s latest firmware update is to blame, a claim backed up by several other readers.
It appears that some companies are already releasing fixes. Also, the Antank S3 Max, one of the few devices to pass The Verge’s inspection, retains full functionality. Even so, gamers are at the mercy of the manufacturers to respond to Nintendo. There is also the possibility that another firmware release will block any countermeasures.
Nintendo has resisted Switch 2 price increases, but accessories haven’t been as fortunate. With high demand for cheaper alternatives, the cat-and-mouse game to keep third-party docks running continues.
