The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack has yet to provide access to classic DS and 3DS games. While these additions may be inevitable, the Switch 2 specs can’t entirely replicate the retro gaming experience. A new Nintendo patent reported on by Mike Odyssey suggests that a new accessory could add another screen.
With dual displays, the classic consoles would often dedicate a map or inventory UI to the bottom screen. Meanwhile, the main gameplay view would rest above. However, titles could also split the visuals between both screens or dedicate one portion to touchpad controls. In the patent published on October 16th, a Switch 2 accessory could mirror this functionality.
The document on the USPTO website illustrates how Nintendo’s latest console would become more versatile. Previous filings showed an additional screen attaching to the Switch 2. Once connected, gamers could choose a Dual Screen mode commonly employed by DS and 3DS games. The Single-Screen option would act like a picture-in-picture. Finally, Switch mode would allow players to swap between displays.
Nintendo patents often raise false expectations
It’s important to realize that past Nintendo patents haven’t always culminated in a new product. Even so, the company has recently gone to great lengths to accommodate retro gaming fans. When the Switch 2 launched, it released a modernized GameCube controller. Its goal was to complement titles on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
Gamers were even more surprised when the Virtual Boy add-on appeared. Despite the original console's struggles, players can again experience authentic stereoscopic 3D gameplay. It now seems more plausible that Nintendo has been waiting for another accessory to bring the DS and 3DS back to life.
