Atari has announced the launch of a new retro console, but what's unique about it is that the original console was released as a rival to the Atari 2600. The console is the Intellivision Sprint, and it is a modern remake of the 1979 Intellivision manufactured by Mattel Electronics.
The launch of Atari's Intellivision Sprint coincides with the 45th anniversary of the original console. The Intellivision Sprint will largely resemble the original, but with modern features. The new console will have a wooden trim on the front and gold plates on top.
It will also feature the receiver-style disc controllers; however, unlike the original, which had wires, these will be wireless and have a rechargeable battery. The controllers will automatically charge when docked into the console. Atari will ship the console with 48 double-sided overlays for the 45 built-in games.
Atari says the Intellivision Sprint will have an HDMI port for connecting it to a TV or monitor. It will also have USB-A ports so owners of the original Intellivision I and Intellivision II controllers can use them, albeit with the aid of an adapter.
The Intellivision Sprint is available to pre-order now for $149.99 and will begin shipping by December 2025. Included in the box are the console, two controllers, 48 double-sided overlays, a USB power adapter, and an HDMI cable. The console is currently only available to pre-order from Atari's own website, unlike the Atari GameStation Go, which is available to preorder on Amazon for $179.99 ahead of its release on October 31.
