The Switch 2's additional USB-C port is a welcome addition to Nintendo's new handheld as it allows users to connect a peripheral to one port and charge from the other. However, Nintendo says only the bottom port has support for video output.

Among the upgrades the Nintendo Switch 2 has over its predecessor is an extra USB-C port. Positioned at the top of the console, this port allows users to charge the Switch 2 when using the handheld in tabletop mode or to connect accessories such as the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera or the Hori Nintendo Switch 2 Camera. Unfortunately, one feature this USB-C port lacks is support for video output.

The info was revealed by Nintendo's Koichi Kawamoto during a Q&A. When asked if the Nintendo Switch 2's two USB-C ports are capable of image output, he replied that video output is limited to the USB-C port at the bottom of the device. This means that owners of the Switch 2 won't be able to use a third-party dock with the USB-C port at the top.

In addition to not having support for video output via the top USB-C port, Koichi Kawamoto also added that he can't guarantee the Switch 2's support for display glasses such as the Xreal Air 2 Glasses (curr. available on Amazon for $299) since they are not official Nintendo products.

The Nintendo Switch works with the display glasses although with some additional hardware that allows the Switch to be used in docked mode even without its official dock. However, now that the Switch 2 has two USB-C ports, there might be no need for a dock as users can simply plug in a charger into the port at the top while the glasses plugs directly into the USB-C port at the bottom. The only problem might be if Nintendo has restricted docked mode to charging from the bottom port.
