Mario Kart Wii gets native PC port with 60 FPS and online play even as fans decry AI use

For those of you who wanted to try out Mario Kart Wii all over again, a developer has managed to natively port it to PC, promising butter-smooth performance and a few quality-of-life features without needing to run the game in an emulator. This is the first static recompilation of a Wii game, called Mario Kart Wiicompiled.
The developer behind Mario Kart Wiicompiled, Patchzzy, announced the project and stated on X, “Announcing Mario Kart Wiicompiled! The first static recompilation of a Wii game: Mario Kart Wii, rebuilt for PC. Releasing in beta this August, with online play and optional Retro Rewind support, bringing over 200 tracks.”
Patchzzy also included a trailer for Mario Kart Wiicompiled showcasing the game running natively on PC at a buttery-smooth 60 FPS. However, he further noted that the Retro Rewind track mod featuring over 145 additional tracks is not included in the base Mario Kart Wiicompiled. Retro Rewind must be installed separately as an add-on and is fully compatible with the native PC port.
The use of AI has fans divided
However, fans who saw the X post reviewed the project details (the developer FAQ notes) and noticed that the static recompilation project used AI for coding assistance, not for in-game assets. This was enough to jumpstart a heated discussion about the use of AI for native recompilation efforts. However, most fans are satisfied with a functional, decent native PC port of Mario Kart Wii rather than delving into the AI debate.
This news builds on the growing trend of recompilation projects for older games coming to PC. Numerous Nintendo 64 titles have arrived on PC, like The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, with the ability to add ray tracing to the game.
Similarly, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time arrived on PC with ray tracing support, 60+ FPS, and high-res texture packs to modernize the older N64 title. Other notable N64 PC ports include Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Bomberman 64, and Dinosaur Planet.
However, the arrival of native PC ports of Wii games has many fans asking questions, with the platform’s PowerPC architecture and motion controls posing a significant challenge. For now, many fans are curious whether Mario Kart Wiicompiled will support original Wii Remotes or motion steering in the upcoming native PC release.
