SanDisk’s 30th Anniversary Pokémon Mewtwo portable SSD costs up to $199 and hits 1,000 MB/s

SanDisk is celebrating 30 years of Pokémon with a Mew USB-C Flash Drive and a Mewtwo Edition SSD that reads at up to 1,000 MB/s, though a similar model is already on sale without the artwork. It’s positioned more as a collectible than a go-to portable SSD, paying homage to Pokémon’s history.
SanDisk and The Pokémon Company International officially collaborated to release two licensed SSD drives for Pokémon’s 30th anniversary earlier this week, including a 128GB Mew Edition USB-C flash drive that costs just $27.99. Meanwhile, a chunkier yet sleek portable Mewtwo Edition SSD, with read and write speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s, is now on sale in 500GB and 1TB variants.
A themed release of the Portable SSD V3
What’s interesting is that the Mewtwo SSD’s model number, SDSSE31K-1T00-G25, differs by just one letter from SDSSDE31-1T00-G25, SanDisk’s already available Portable SSD V3 (which costs $10 less, sans the branding). Both drives are practically identical, with USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds and a two-meter drop guarantee.
The 30th anniversary Pokémon collab is more of a cosmetic homage than a proprietary release or a storage upgrade for Nintendo hardware. Back in 2024, SanDisk released Pikachu-, Gengar-, and Snorlax-themed microSD cards for the original Nintendo Switch. So Switch 2 owners looking for eye-catching microSD cards for their Nintendo handhelds will have to skip this one.
However, that’s not to say the Mewtwo Edition Portable SSD isn’t worth its salt as a collectible or for practical EDC use. Connecting over USB 3.2 Gen 2 and achieving read and write speeds of 1,000 MB/s, with a claimed 5x throughput compared with a traditional hard drive, the Pokémon Anniversary SSDs, priced at $119.99 for the 500GB version and $199 for the 1TB variant, seem like a decent portable everyday-carry collectible.
SanDisk's VP of consumer product management, Susan Park, framed the collaboration as a moment of brand fit rather than new engineering. She said:
“Iconic and powerful, Mew and Mewtwo are among the most beloved and instantly recognizable Pokémon. By combining the enduring appeal of these two Pokémon with SanDisk’s proven performance and reliability, we’re giving fans new ways to carry the moments, memories and creations that matter the most.”
