GTA 6 pre-order sales could recoup $2 billion in production costs before release date

Most studios must count on a strong post-launch performance to meet revenue goals. However, Rockstar Games is in a unique position, where GTA 6 pre-orders may pay for production and development costs. Karl Kontus, SVP of Sensor Tower Video Game Insights, projects that by its release date, the game will recoup its rumored $2 billion budget.
An impressive start
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick recently called sales “unprecedented and astonishing”, but didn’t cite a dollar amount. However, Sensor Tower runs a tracker that estimates the title’s performance. Currently, it shows that 4.3 million copies have been sold for Xbox and PS5 consoles. Meanwhile, revenue stands at $421 million.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Kontus says pre-orders could be unusually front-loaded compared to most games. That threatens to slow the title’s pace somewhat, resulting in 25 million reservations instead of 40 million. Nevertheless, the week before the GTA 6 release date should see the highest number of sales.
Zelnick also confirmed that at a $100 price, the Ultimate Edition is more popular than the $80 Standard alternative. Sensor Tower believes 89% of buyers have chosen the more expensive version with bonus items. Even if more casual buyers later change that split, the extra revenue should help the studio justify massive investments.
Rockstar hasn’t disclosed how much it has spent ahead of the GTA 6 release date. Still, most analysts approximate development costs at $1 to $1.5 billion. When factoring in other expenditures like marketing, the total could exceed $2 billion. That would make the game by far the most expensive endeavor in the industry’s history.
Why the new GTA is so costly
Preliminary work reportedly began as far back as 12 years ago and long development cycles threaten budgets. Players also anticipate a blockbuster-level cinematic experience and groundbreaking visuals. Earlier leaks hinted at an extensively detailed open-world map with AI-driven NPC behavior.
With the financial security provided by GTA 6 pre-order sales, Rockstar can turn its attention to new modes and content. The GTA Online successor is the most likely target, though it may not debut as soon as some fans expect.
