In a GTA 6 preview, Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson revealed that Xbox and PS5 console builds render graphics at 30 fps. Developers may optimize the game for higher frame rates by its release date. Even so, PS5 Pro owners had anticipated an option for smoother performance.

Following the Netflix Extended Look, details about Rockstar’s title are surfacing. With the embargo lifted on previews, performance options on the GTA 6 release date are coming into focus. According to the Brazilian Flow Games, the title will run at 30 fps on all consoles. The news casts doubt on the advantages of the PS5 Pro upgrade.

Frame rate targets

The gaming site spoke to Rob Nelson, the Rockstar North Development Leader and Co-Director. He explained that current builds are targeting 30 fps. Nelson doesn’t rule out 60 fps at launch or later, but the goal is seemingly not a priority.

Nelson was sparse on other performance details, such as ray tracing effects on Xbox and PlayStation consoles. He also didn’t address GTA 6 PS5 Pro enhancements, which owners hoped would offer higher frame rates and a 120 Hz setting.

With the Xbox Series X and base PS5, the revelation may not be as surprising. Captured on the entry-level PS5, gameplay in the Netflix Extended Look boasted an extreme level of detail. Unfortunately, the cutting-edge graphics threaten to stress the aging CPUs of current-gen systems.

PlayStation and Rockstar may not discuss the benefits of the PS5 Pro version until closer to the November GTA 6 release date. However, based on the preview, owners are already concerned the $900 console won't significantly boost performance.

Not even 40 fps?

Sony’s flagship hardware packs a noticeably more potent GPU. Still, its CPU is only a modest upgrade over the cheaper system. With crowds of lifelike NPCs and a massive map taxing the processor, achieving 60 fps could be difficult.

On the other hand, PSSR is the secret weapon of the PS5 Pro. In an earlier video, Digital Foundry analysts argued that thanks to upscaling, 40 fps could be realistic. The version will also likely include advanced ray-traced global illumination and reflections, as seen in trailers.

It’s wise to wait for Rockstar to further clarify frame rates before considering canceling GTA 6 pre-orders. Nevertheless, some gamers worried about laggy controls have decided to hold out for the inevitable PC port.
