"I wanted to make a city that feels alive, but is made fully of ASCII symbols."
At a time when corporate greed is top-of-mind in the gaming zeitgeist, there are still people who are creating things for the love of the game, instead of the investors. Indie solo dev Grow Now! Games have created a walkable cyberpunk city rendered entirely with ASCII characters.

Indie developer Grow Now! Games recently showcased the project in a YouTube video titled “A Walkable ASCII Cyberpunk City in One HTML File.” The concept is exactly what it sounds like: a three-dimensional environment constructed visually from letters, numbers, and symbols. Rather than relying on detailed character models and high-resolution textures, the project uses familiar ASCII characters to create architecture, depth, and even a present and active ambient population, including speeding cars and people walking the city around you, all wrapped up in a distinct cyberpunk atmosphere. It’s an unusual approach, but the results scream old-school Cyberspace and Cyberpunk dreams made reality.

The prototype focuses on exploration rather than conventional objectives. Players can wander city streets, enter buildings, ride elevators, and discover different elevations throughout the environment in this impressive little engine. That verticality helps the city feel really  substantial, and the most recent project update has already included a ton of improvements and upgrades, improving graphics, smoothing the way controlling the player camera feels, improving view distance, and bringing interiors with multiple stories, with surprisingly scenic and impressive views of the city below.

Access to the project, ASCII CITY Prototype 1, is available through the developer’s Ko-fi store, with purchases of at least $2.50 (USD) unlocking the project and future updates as of now. As of the writing of this article 989 supporters have purchased the prototype.  Although there are no conventional systems like missions or progression at the moment, the developer has mentioned seeing a full game in the project someday, and is still actively providing updates, with a new update video scheduled to release on the day after the posting of this article. The developer has mentioned wanting to add a dialogue and interaction system with the residents of the city. He has even mentioned one day making some or all of the project open one day. ASCII CITY Prototype 1 is a breath of fresh air. A single developer making a game out of a passion project and a cool idea, leading to a literal city full of endless potential.
