Xbox’s new disc-to-digital initiative doesn’t mention migration for older Xbox 360 or original Xbox games
Xbox’s new Project Positron is finally here, and it positions itself as a game “preservation” feature. However, you still need an Xbox Series X or an Xbox One with a disc drive to use it and obtain a digital license for your game.
Xbox discs could potentially become worth more than the games stored on them in the near future. Additionally, users who obtain a digital license will have their games tied to their accounts, while the game discs will continue to function as they did before after the entitlement is claimed. However, there’s no mention of older Xbox 360 or original Xbox games, possibly because they lack unique identifiers or disc IDs, essentially allowing them to be cloned or 'redeemed' indefinitely.
Preserving 'thousands' of relatively recent titles?
Beginning August 31, Xbox Insiders can trade in their physical discs and obtain digital keys or licenses. Xbox VP Jason Ronald told Xbox Wire that thousands of Xbox One and Xbox Series X titles will support the new disc-to-digital feature at launch, but Microsoft has not yet published a specific list.
Project Positron, or Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature, lets players insert a supported Xbox disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and boot the game to obtain a license that grants access through Xbox Play Anywhere and allows them to stream the game via Xbox Cloud Gaming. The Xbox disc in question will still play the respective title as intended.
However, the bottom line is that this feature will work only on two console generations and will exclude the drive-less Xbox Series S as well as the digital Xbox Series X, for obvious reasons. Older consoles and disc collections, many of which have arguably more pressing needs (discs can last as little as 30 years even when stored properly in some cases), essentially won't benefit from Microsoft's new initiative.
For now, Microsoft hasn’t announced an official rollout date. All that’s known so far is that Insiders will be able to get hands-on experience with the new disc-to-digital feature toward the end of August. Coincidentally, this beta rollout is happening just eight weeks after Sony confirmed that it would stop manufacturing physical discs beginning in January 2028.
Xbox VP Jason Ronald, who is overseeing the broader disc-to-digital Xbox shift, is presenting the new effort as a continuity measure that extends libraries across console generations. In the Xbox Wire post, he stated:
“This is part of our broader commitment to game preservation.” Despite this, he failed to address the fact that the initiative doesn’t cover or mention Xbox 360 or original Xbox game libraries, which make up more than half of Xbox’s disc-dependent history.
A point-scoring play?
One could argue that the exercise is at least in part Microsoft turning the tables on Sony, which has taken flak from gamers and the industry for abandoning game discs, with a targeted implementation date in 2028. Xbox was previously the target of considerable ire from gamers during its Xbox One launch event, and Sony capitalized on it with a viral video ‘showing’ gamers how to ‘gift’ used copies to friends.
Whether Xbox is capitalizing on the moment or it’s just excellent timing as the debate about physical games rages on, the company’s recent push raises an increasingly pressing question that many analysts have already begun asking: Is this generation the last to see consoles with disc drives?
