NateTheHate hints Microsoft may reveal a surprise first-party game at Gamescom 2026, developed externally, alongside Xbox's 25th anniversary booth lineup.

Industry insider NateTheHate says Microsoft is sitting on a surprise video game project built around an existing first-party property, with speculation swirling around a possible reveal at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, Germany. The insider first flagged the tease on social media in response to a fan question about possible surprises at the show, saying only that it had "piqued" their curiosity.

External studio tied to owned Microsoft IP

According to the insider, Microsoft would act strictly as publisher on the project, with development handled by an outside partner studio sitting outside the Xbox Game Studios umbrella. The insider has ruled out several fan-guessed candidates, including The Elder Scrolls VI, a rumored StarCraft shooter, Wolfenstein 3, and existing announced titles such as Marvel's Blade and OD.

The project is described as a new game rather than a hardware or service announcement, ruling out any link to the rumored disc-to-digital initiative some fans floated. The original insider has also cautioned that it remains unconfirmed whether the title will have any presence at Gamescom this year, so the reveal itself stays unverified for now.

Surprise tease accompanies packed anniversary lineup

The rumor lands alongside Xbox's confirmed Gamescom plans, where the publisher is marking its 25th anniversary with 25 upcoming titles spread across 140 hands-on stations at its Cologne booth in Hall 7.

Confirmed floor demos include the first public playable campaign build of Gears of War: E-Day ahead of its October 6 release, along with early hands-on slices of Fable, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Minecraft Dungeons II, Halo: Campaign Evolved, and Metro 2039. Xbox will stream from the booth on August 26 and 27, following Geoff Keighley's Opening Night Live broadcast on August 25.

The booth also carries a live combat demo theater built around Fable, alongside third-party titles from partner publishers. Any unannounced publishing project, if confirmed, would add to an already dense back half of the year for Xbox's release slate.
