Xbox has officially announced the long-rumored disc-to-digital feature. Users can simply insert a game disc into their Xbox Series X or Xbox One consoles, and the service will generate a license tied to the disc. Reliable leaker kepler thinks that this is a clear sign that Xbox Helix won't have a disc drive.

After months of leaks and rumors, Xbox has officially unveiled the disc-to-digital features that will allow gamers to effectively digitize their physical game discs. The feature, which is still in beta, works by creating a digital license of a physical game disc, entitling the license holder to a digital copy of the game.

While the community as a whole has praised this feature, including the ex-president of PlayStation Studios, some people have warned that this is a sign that the next-gen Xbox Helix doesn’t have a physical disc drive. Among these people, the most prominent is reliable leaker Kepler_L2.

Kepler takes a jab at the gaming community on X, exclaiming that “the amount of people not realizing they're doing this because Helix has no disc drive is astounding.” This effectively confirms, per Kepler’s assertion, that the Xbox Helix will not have a physical disc drive. While Microsoft has yet to talk about the matter, it is more than likely that the Xbox Helix will be all-digital.

On the surface, this would put the Xbox Helix on equal footing with the Sony PlayStation 6. However, Microsoft can leverage its disc-to-digital feature to reassure gamers that their gaming library will move forward with them. Sony has no such feature in the works and, if the PS6 indeed lacks a disc drive, gamers will be left without any way to play their PS5 games on the PS6. This would be a major win for the next-gen Xbox Helix.

We’ll have to wait and see how Sony responds to this development. But based on Sony’s handling of the PlayStation disc debacle, there is a good chance that Sony would just ignore this for the PS6 launch.
