State of Decay 3 survives Xbox shake-up as closed beta confirmed for 2026

State of Decay 3 is still alive and moving toward its planned 2027 release, despite developer Undead Labs being among the studios affected by Microsoft's recent restructuring of Xbox's first-party operations. Microsoft has now confirmed that the zombie survival sequel will receive a closed beta before the end of 2026, giving players their most substantial opportunity yet to test the game.

Light at the end of the layoffs tunnel?

The confirmation matters because Undead Labs' changing relationship with Xbox raised questions about the project's future. Microsoft's July restructuring saw several studios transition toward new ownership arrangements, with Undead Labs reportedly retaining funding to complete State of Decay 3.

The latest announcement effectively puts those concerns to rest. Microsoft says State of Decay 3 remains in development and will continue to be available through Xbox Game Pass. The closed beta is expected later this year, with registrations already open for interested players. 

According to the latest details, the upcoming beta will be larger than previous alpha testing and will feature the franchise's largest map so far, along with untethered multiplayer and gameplay improvements based on feedback from earlier testers. Recent Gamescom coverage provides a better idea of what that larger world means. A hands-on report describes a map roughly four times the size of a region from State of Decay 2, with a more reactive infection system and greater environmental interaction. Players can reportedly use environmental elements to deal with zombies, including creating hazards from gas leaks and using vehicles to block enemies.

Limited information for fans at best

Undead Labs first revealed the game in 2020, but public information remained scarce for years before the studio began showing more of the project. The sequel is being built around a larger world and deeper survival systems while retaining the series' combination of scavenging, community management, and zombie combat. For fans, the biggest takeaway is simple: State of Decay 3 has survived another major Xbox shake-up. Undead Labs may no longer occupy the same position within Microsoft's first-party structure, but the game still receives development funding and platform support. 

With a closed beta planned before the end of 2026 and a 2027 release target still intact, State of Decay 3 finally appears to be approaching the finish line. After years of waiting, zombie survival fans may soon get their first meaningful chance to decide whether the sequel's much larger ambitions are worth the wait.
